I put down Pearl’s Premium late last fall. The germination rate was not quite to my satisfaction. This year the snow completely covered my lawn - up to 4 feet deep in places for the entire winter season. In early March the snow was gone.
In my community everyone’s lawn looks like a hell... except for mine! My lawn is a rich green, thank you. It weathered the rough winter much better than I expected.

“We fired our landscaper; we didn’t need him anymore. The roots are deep, so we didn’t need to water at all, and we barely mowed. During the drought in August, our lawn was a little less green, while our neighbors’ lawns were brown. And our lawn came up this spring before all of their lawns. I've recommended Pearl's to all my clients with income properties." - Ed Lyon, real estate agent with Presentation Properties, Newton, MA
“We shouldn’t be using potable water on lawns. And fertilizer should be used for growing crops, not grass. It’s the proper thing to do.” -Bob Kiley, green home developer, owns High Oaks Realty Trust, Groton, MA, who using it at new homes he builds with no need for sprinkler systems:
"As someone with more than 15 years experience in the study of environmental toxicity, I’m deeply concerned by the adverse effects that typical lawn care products have on our environment, children and pets. Studies have conclusively made the connection between lawn chemicals and cancers in humans and dogs, not to mention the impact they have on the environment at large.
It is an immense challenge to convince consumers of the importance of using less toxic products to achieve a beautiful lawn. Pearl’s Premium has developed the grass seed mix to do just that; it has the potential to mark a sea change in the environment. As an animal lover and environmental advocate, I wholeheartedly endorse Pearl's Premium."

"We
cannot begin to say enough good things about this (Pearl's Premium Lawn Seed)
product. I originally learned about Pearl's through a donation to the North
South River Watershed Association (nsrwa.org). We have struggled with the
"traditional" big-box store multi-stage solutions, spent tons of money on
fertilizer and lots of hard work that still left me wondering what I was still
doing wrong .
Then,
we tried Pearl's. Now, it is true that this summer's cool and wet weather has
been a lawn-growers paradise, but when planted right next to some other green
lawn fluff in a bag that I had been using to patch a bad area, there’s no
comparison. The Pearl's simply took off and now looks tremendous. In a side-by
side comparison, it is so clear which seed is the Pearl's - same ground, same
soil, nothing else is different. The bag says to water it for a month (then
never again) but that was not even the case since Mother Nature has been so
helpful this summer with plenty of rainwater to do the work
.
If
you are still hoping to have a pretty green lawn this summer and are thinking
you must be doing something wrong, spend a few extra bucks once, give this stuff
a try and just relax. Stop buying chemicals and pouring all your expensive
drinking water on the ground.
I
also can strongly recommend the 'longer (cut taller) is better' approach to lawn
maintenance...not only does the grass look great and need no watering but less
time spent on a mower cutting it and more time spent in your bare feet playing
on it is what its all about, right?"
Steve, Norwell, MA
"I am SO tickled with our Pearl's Premium lawn, particularly the strip between the sidewalk and street. That strip has never looked so good and so far NO DANDELIONS! Our lawn looks BEE-U-TEE-FUL!"
Marge, Marblehead, MA
"I
am a landscape designer who has worked in the Boston area for 26 years.
In that
time I have been in constant contact with lawns that use pesticides. I
have had
cancer twice in the last 21 years. During this time I have never used
chemicals
on my own lawn. This spring I installed Pearl’s Premium in my
yard. The
seed has come in thick and lush - even under my two ancient sugar maples
where
nothing has ever grown.
Friends
and clients are just floored with the results! As expected, in parts of
the lawn
that had previously been totally weeds, some crabgrass and clover have
popped
up. But it’s hardly noticeable in the overall effect of the lawn.
I
feel like I'm in Ireland. The grass is a deep, emerald green. I have
yet to mow
it eight weeks later - it really is slow growing! And most importantly, I
can make a
sound and ecologically responsible referral to my clients who want a
lawn."

The first time Gloria and I learned about Pearl’s Premium was in Farm Show magazine. While we liked what we read, we were a bit skeptical and for good reason…..
We had a couple of challenges with our lawn. The front lawn was spotty and we had a shaded area that we had never been able to grow grass in because it got no sun, period.
We tried all kinds of seeds in that shaded area; everything we could find from mail order catalogues, our local garden center and sod. We even planted zoysia plugs. Nothing would grow. The seeds never came up, the expensive sod died within 3 months and the zoysia plugs didn’t last long either.
When our new water well was installed in the front yard, the area was left bare. We decided to replant with Pearl’s Premium and also try the shady mix in the shaded area.
The Pearl’s Premium installed easily; I used the same process I used for everything else I had tried. I raked the area to create a seed bed and put down some pellet lime. I followed the Pearl’s Premium instructions and watered the seed each day for the first 3 weeks and every other day for the last week, unless it rained of course.
In about a month, the Pearl’s Premium had come up and looked great. It’s so green! And thick! The shade grass is even greener than the other lawn that gets sun! And that’s an area where we’ve never been able to grow grass before.
Before Pearl’s Premium, I was ready to put down artificial grass or some sort of rug; we just couldn’t grow grass in that shady area, but Gloria wouldn’t have it. She wanted real grass or nothing.
The one trouble we ran into was when I hand broadcast some fertilizer 12-12-12 [editor's note: we recommend using organic fertilizers of 10-10-10 or less and always follow spreading instructions] on the Pearl’s Premium. It wasn’t spread out very evenly and it killed the grass in some spots where the fertilizer clumped up. If I had just let it alone it would be perfect.

For 20 years I have had no success in growing a decent lawn. Your grass was my last hope. I’m very pleased to say, where I could never grow grass, it is now flourishing. I have the perfect yard, front and back. Most important of all is that I have an organic lawn and never have to use poisonous chemicals to keep it safe and beautiful!
Heidi, New Bedford
I saw the empty bag sitting on my desk, and thought it time to tell you of the smashing success we have had. When the seed arrived, we were in the middle of a heat wave. With proper watering and help from a few rain clouds, it began to grow. Now I look out the window and it’s beautiful. My neighbors all want to know where to get it.
Dale, Puyallup
"Last
fall I was looking for options on organic lawns. A neighbor saw the
segment
about Pearl's Premium on Channel 5 news and told me about it. My first
feeling
was that it was way too good to be true, but .. I had a Pearl's Premium
lawn
installed and every single claim made on the website became a reality in
front
of my eyes.
I
have the best lawn in town, and it's all done without any chemicals!
Very few
weeds, I am mowing it once per month - this is really the most amazing
part of
it! - I don't need to water it.
Comparing
to the other lawns (in my neighborhood) - all full of chemicals and
watered
several times per day by expensive sprinkle systems, my lawn has
amazingly few
weeds. How many? Well, ...I have been successfully controlling them only
by hand
pulling them. The other nice feature is that my lawn is green all winter
long.
And here is another little secret not mentioned on the website: (I don't
know
why but it seems to) it repels mosquitoes!.
The
landscaping company I use for the flower beds could not believe the
extent of
the root system of my Pearl's lawn. The roots of my super grass are deep
and
almost impossible to penetrate, hard to get into to edge the flower
beds! No
wonder the weeds are having such a hard time! Keeping the grass about
3-4
inches long is also extremely helpful at preventing weeds since the weed
seeds
and roots are always shaded. I am going to follow the Pearl's Premium
"recipe"
further this fall and [convert] my back yard lawn.
I
can't recommend this seed highly enough. I feel fantastic about having
this lawn
not only because of the little work it requires but mostly because of
the
positive impact it has on my family and on the environment. I don't feel
guilty
for wasting natural resources or making my family sick from using
chemicals or
negatively impacting the environment just for the sake of having a green
lawn!
This
is the real thing, a gardener's dream - go for it, you'll be very happy
you did!
The best of all is that you REALLY have to mow it only ONCE a month, it
is that
slow growing."
Adriana, Belmont, MA
I can not tell you how great it is to walk in my Pearl's Premium yard. The stray Pearl's seed from the spreader that has grown in the gardens is amazing to pull out due to the roots.
Kendra, Greenland
PS thank you for the continued help!
"We are extremely pleased with the results of our spring planting of Pearl's Premium. We now have grass in places that have never been successful in at least 26 years.
We plan to plant again (in different areas) within the next couple of days. Thanks for a great product, for us and the environment."
Liz, Lexington, MA
We are coming up on one year since planting. We thoroughly enjoyed all the compliments last summer after the great crop of grass came up!
We love your product and are sharing the word with others on our lake. We look forward to improving the density every year, and enjoying the overall quality. Thanks!
Rita, Lakeside in Minnesota
